The Sher Singh Karki Memorial Sports Competition began in Muwani, Pithoragarh on Friday, inaugurated by Sports Minister Rekha Arya. Teams from rural regions across the district are participating in the event.
While inaugurating the competition, Minister Rekha Arya said that the state government is working to provide sports facilities even in remote areas. She stated that the goal is to produce national and international-level champions from every village in Uttarakhand, fulfilling the vision of establishing the state as a recognized sports hub.
The minister added that several initiatives have been taken to strengthen sports culture and ensure a secure future for athletes, motivating youth to adopt sports as a career. She emphasized that most athletics champions come from rural backgrounds, and events like this are crucial to nurturing talent.
Rekha Arya also mentioned that India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and expressed hope that Uttarakhand will play a significant role during the event.
District BJP President Girish Joshi, Zila Panchayat President Jitendra Prasad, school manager Ranjeet Singh, Suresh Suyal, Dheeraj Singh Bisht, Purn Chandra Joshi, Mukul Kandpal, SDM Khushboo, Kundan Singh Pujari and other officials were present at the inauguration.

Inspection of under-construction sports ground
On the occasion, the minister inspected the under-construction sports ground and instructed officials to complete the work within the stipulated timeline with full quality standards. She said that the ground should be completed by the end of the year and will play a key role in developing rural sports talent to national and international levels.
