India’s Foreign Policy Balancing Act: Navigating Ties with US, China, and Russia

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has highlighted how India is managing its foreign relations amid challenging global dynamics. Speaking during a joint press briefing with Germany’s Foreign Minister in New Delhi, he explained that maintaining balanced ties with major powers like the US, China, and Russia requires strategic flexibility.

Jaishankar noted that while India faces pressure due to shifting geopolitical equations, the country has developed strong strategic relations with multiple nations. Referring to Germany as the largest economy in the European Union, he stressed the importance of deepening Indo-German cooperation. He described the relationship between India and Germany as “very stable,” emphasizing collaboration in areas such as UN reforms and global governance.

On the broader diplomatic front, India continues to engage with the US despite friction over trade and tariffs during Donald Trump’s tenure, while also keeping dialogue channels open with China and Russia. Jaishankar pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to China, where he held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting the relevance of the Russia-India-China (RIC) framework as an alternative in global politics.
