Jaishankar Discusses Regional Tensions and Evacuation Support With Iran’s Abbas Araghchi

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday, discussing the current tense situation in the region and other key matters. Jaishankar shared details of the call via social media platform X, stating that he understood Iran’s perspective amid ongoing regional complexities and expressed gratitude for Tehran’s assistance in safely evacuating Indian citizens.

The discussion comes in the backdrop of the recent Iran-Israel conflict that escalated over accusations of uranium enrichment and nuclear weapon development. During the 12-day standoff, India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate its nationals from both countries. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that under this operation, a special flight carrying 173 Indians from Iran arrived in New Delhi via Yerevan, Armenia late last night.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted that so far, a total of 4,415 Indian citizens have been safely brought home through 19 special flights under the mission.

The situation flared up after Israel launched a strike on Iran on June 13 over nuclear allegations. The conflict intensified when the United States carried out a large-scale bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites on June 23. Though US President Donald Trump surprisingly announced a ceasefire agreement on June 24, it lasted only a few hours, with both sides accusing each other of violations and continuing attacks. Eventually, after further American mediation, a fragile ceasefire was re-established.
