Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the world’s second-highest trek, Janaktal, and the Mulinga Pass in Neelapani Valley during his proposed visit to Mukhba and Harsil. The development of these trekking routes is expected to revive tourism in the long-restricted Jadung Valley, which was closed following the 1962 India-China war.
The government plans to develop this region on the lines of Ladakh. After the war, Nelang and Jadung valleys were converted into military zones, restricting civilian and tourist movement. Now, efforts are underway to reopen these areas, promoting adventure tourism and boosting the local economy.
District authorities are actively preparing to open trekking routes in the Jadung-Janaktal and Neelapani-Mulinga Pass regions. According to District Magistrate Dr. Mehrban Singh Bisht, PM Modi’s visit and the inauguration of these treks will give a new identity to adventure tourism. Additionally, under the Vibrant Villages scheme, homestay construction has begun to resettle Nelang and Jadung villages.
If successful, this initiative could turn Uttarakhand’s remote areas into a key tourist attraction. However, improved infrastructure, including roads and transport facilities, will be crucial for its success.
