Joshimath – Tension surfaced in Jyotirmath after a video showing people offering namaz inside a municipal under-construction building went viral on social media. The administration moved swiftly, calling representatives from both communities for talks and urging them to maintain peace.
The incident relates to a building under construction in the Meat Market area by the Municipal Council, reportedly being developed for table tennis activities for children. A video circulating online on Thursday showed members of the Muslim community offering namaz inside the premises.
SDM Chandrashekhar Vashishtha convened a meeting with members of both communities and appealed for maintaining communal harmony. Police have been directed to closely monitor the situation and keep a watch on individuals attempting to disturb the atmosphere.
Municipal Council Chairperson Deveshwari Shah stated that members of the Muslim community had verbally sought permission to offer prayers for ten days during Roza. However, following the controversy, a meeting of councillors was held in the evening under her chairmanship. It was decided to lock the room in the under-construction building, and the community members were asked to make their own alternative arrangements.
Meanwhile, in Gopeshwar, representatives of Hindu organisations met the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, demanding an inquiry and action in the matter. Members of Bajrang Dal and ABVP sought clarity on the incident and called for restrictions on religious activities in public and government buildings in the future.
