AIIMS Rishikesh, in association with SPIC MACAY, hosted a captivating Kalaripayattu event, showcasing Kerala’s ancient martial art. The program highlighted dynamic demonstrations of Kalaripayattu’s techniques, weapons, and fighting styles. Attendees were enthralled by the performers’ physical prowess and the cultural heritage on display.
The event, held at the AIIMS Rishikesh campus, was inaugurated by the renowned Kalaripayattu master, Rajeev K.P., who shared insights into the martial art’s history and its social significance. Following this, participants exhibited a series of routine moves, including strikes, kicks, grappling techniques, and the use of traditional weapons such as the flexible sword (Urumi).
Along with martial arts performances, interactive workshops were organized, giving participants the opportunity to learn basic Kalaripayattu moves and understand the discipline and training involved. Students and spectators alike appreciated the display of art and skill.
Professor (Dr.) Meenu Singh, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Rishikesh, emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting traditional Indian martial arts like Kalaripayattu. She noted how the martial art not only enhances physical fitness but also instills discipline, focus, and cultural pride. Academic Dean, Prof. Jaya Chaturvedi, encouraged the younger generation to embrace and carry forward such traditional arts to ensure their preservation.
The event concluded with Prof. Meenu Singh and other dignitaries awarding certificates of appreciation to the performers for their exceptional demonstrations. Program coordinators, Prof. Geeta Negi and Dr. Vandana Dhingra, highlighted the relevance of Kalaripayattu to modern fitness and the need to integrate traditional practices into contemporary routines. They described the event as full of energy, learning, and cultural exchange, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
