In a strict move to ensure pure and safe food for Kanwar Yatra pilgrims, the Uttarakhand government has issued a mandate requiring all food vendors along the yatra routes to prominently display their name, license, and identity card at their stalls. Non-compliance may lead to a fine of up to ₹2 lakh under the Food Safety Act.
Health Secretary and FDA Commissioner Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar has instructed officials in districts hosting the yatra — including Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri, Pauri, and Uttarkashi — to run anti-adulteration drives and ensure that food business operators follow the new rules. These directives apply to all food vendors, including small-scale operators like roadside stalls and pushcart vendors.
Strict Penalties for Violations
All food vendors must display their food license or registration certificate at their shops. Even small-scale sellers must visibly show their photo ID and registration certificate. Failure to comply will result in penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act, with fines up to ₹2 lakh.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar emphasized that food quality served in shops, stalls, and temporary camps during the Kanwar Yatra must meet the set standards. Additional Food Safety Commissioner Tajbar Singh Jaggi warned that any food business operating without a license will face legal action.
Public Awareness and Complaint Redressal
To educate vendors and the public, the government is launching an IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) campaign through banners, posters, pamphlets, and social media. A toll-free number — 18001804246 — has been made available for the public to report concerns about food quality. Upon receiving complaints, field teams will be dispatched immediately for inspection and necessary action.
