Efforts are in full swing to make the Kedarnath Dham pilgrimage route smoother and safer. The Public Works Department (PWD) is nearing completion of the alternative route being reconstructed after the devastation caused by the 2013 disaster. Out of the 5-kilometre stretch from Garudchatti to Rambara, only 400 meters of work is left.
Alternative Route Nearing Completion
The Garudchatti to Kedarnath stretch was restored in 2021. Now, the final phase of construction from Garudchatti to Rambara is progressing rapidly. According to Superintendent Engineer Mukesh Parmar, only rock-cutting work remains in the final 400 meters, which is targeted for completion within a month. The path will be two meters wide and serve as an alternative route for pilgrims.
Bridge Construction to Boost Safety
The 17-kilometre route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath was badly damaged during the July 31 disaster last year. To reopen the route, several essential bridges are being built:
- A bridge in Rambara has already been completed.
- Plans are in place for a new Bailey bridge to enhance connectivity.
- Another bridge is under construction at Jungle Chatti to ensure safer passage.
Construction Continues Despite Tough Terrain
Adverse weather and rocky, high-altitude terrain have made construction challenging. However, the department is pushing to complete the route quickly. Once finished, the alternative path will provide a safer and more convenient option for pilgrims visiting Kedarnath Dham.
