Dehradun – The Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun will witness a historic transformation next year, as women officer cadets will participate in the Passing Out Parade (POP) for the first time. The upcoming parade on 13 December will mark the final occasion featuring only male cadets, ending a 93-year tradition since IMA’s establishment.
Academy officials confirm that the inclusion of women cadets is a major structural shift aimed at promoting gender equality and strengthening women’s roles in the armed forces. To support this integration, the IMA has upgraded accommodation, training facilities, security systems, medical services, barracks and Officer Mess infrastructure. Training guidelines have also been revised to ensure equal standards without gender bias.
Until now, women officers were commissioned solely through the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. The IMA’s decision to train women cadets alongside men represents a landmark step for the Indian Army, viewed as essential for modern military leadership. In December 2023, the academy replaced the term “Gentleman Cadet” with “Officer Cadet,” symbolising a shift toward inclusive language and equal representation.
The first batch of 19 women cadets joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in August 2022, and after three years of military training, eight secured entry into the IMA on 15 July 2025. They are currently undergoing a one-year advanced training programme and will pass out in the December 2026 parade.

Several veterans believe the upcoming transition reflects evolving defence priorities. While the change has been welcomed widely, concerns remain regarding logistical capacity and long-term adaptation of training frameworks. However, defence officials assert that the integration has been thoroughly planned and will enhance operational strength.
