The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday distanced the Indian government from Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s recent comments regarding the successor of the Dalai Lama. The MEA stated that India does not take any position on issues related to religion or faith and emphasized that religious freedom remains a core principle upheld by the Indian Constitution.
MEA spokesperson stated, “We have seen reports regarding His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s recent statements. The Government of India does not comment or take a stand on matters related to religious beliefs or practices.”
Dalai Lama Reaffirms Sole Authority of Gaden Phodrang Trust
The clarification follows a strong statement issued by the Dalai Lama on Wednesday, in which he asserted that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust holds the exclusive right to recognize his future reincarnation. He firmly rejected any external interference in this spiritual process.
China’s Sharp Response
China reacted strongly, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterating that the reincarnation of senior Tibetan spiritual leaders, including the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, must follow the “Golden Urn” system and requires approval from the central government. She added that while China supports religious freedom, it maintains strict regulations over religious practices, including reincarnation processes.
Kiren Rijiju’s Remarks: Personal, Not Government’s View
Amid this controversy, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated on Friday that all followers of the Dalai Lama across the world support his right to choose his own successor. However, Rijiju clarified that his comments were made in a personal capacity as a follower, and not on behalf of the Indian government.
“There is no confusion on this issue,” said Rijiju. “The Dalai Lama himself will decide on his successor. As a follower, I have full faith in His Holiness.”

Background
