The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for setting up an IIM in Guwahati. The central government will provide financial assistance of Rs 550 crore for the institute, making it the second IIM in the Northeast after Shillong. The bill was introduced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and cleared by voice vote amid opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar. Following its passage, the House was adjourned for the day.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha approved the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 1957. The bill, earlier cleared by the Lok Sabha, was moved in the Upper House by Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy and passed after discussion.
