After the grand conclusion of the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, all eyes are now on Meghalaya, which will host the 39th National Games in 2027. During the closing ceremony at Indira Gandhi International Sports Stadium, Haldwani, on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah handed over the Games flag to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Shah also announced that sports competitions will be organized across six other northeastern states to promote sports in the region.
Uttarakhand’s Performance in the 38th National Games – Hosting the National Games for the first time, Uttarakhand successfully conducted 32 sporting events across Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Haldwani, and Rudrapur. The Services team topped the medal tally with 121 medals (68 Gold, 26 Silver, 27 Bronze), followed by Maharashtra in second place and Haryana in third. Host Uttarakhand secured the seventh position with 103 medals, including 24 Gold, 35 Silver, and 44 Bronze.
Flag Handover Ceremony – The closing event featured a grand flag handover ceremony. Initially, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha received the Games flag, which was then handed over to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah further presented the flag to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, marking the official transition for the 2027 National Games. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and other dignitaries were also present at the event.

India to Become a Global Sports Hub: Mansukh Mandaviya – Addressing the gathering, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised Uttarakhand’s flawless hosting of the National Games, stating that the state is now recognized as both ‘Devbhoomi’ and ‘Khelbhoomi’. He emphasized that players faced no inconvenience, earning Uttarakhand national appreciation. Mandaviya also expressed confidence that India will emerge as a global sports powerhouse, particularly in preparation for the 2036 Olympics.
Congratulating all athletes, he stated that their performances indicate a bright future on international platforms, and the successful execution of the National Games has fostered a positive sporting environment in the country.
