‘One Nation, One Election’: Joint Parliamentary Committee Formed, PP Chaudhary Appointed Chair

A 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ‘One Nation, One Election’ was constituted on Wednesday, with BJP MP PP Chaudhary appointed as its chairman. The committee has been tasked with submitting its report within 90 days, which will be presented in the Lok Sabha during the last week of the upcoming Parliament session. The JPC includes 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.

Committee Composition: The Lok Sabha representatives include 10 MPs from the BJP, 3 from Congress, and one each from the Samajwadi Party (SP), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Trinamool Congress (TMC), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP – Sharad faction), Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), Jana Sena, and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). Prominent leaders from the Rajya Sabha include BJP MPs Bhartruhari Mahtab, Purushottam Rupala, and Anil Baluni.

Key Members: Notable committee members include BJP’s Sambit Patra, Bansuri Swaraj, and Vishnu Dayal Ram; Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi, Manish Tewari, and Sukhdev Bhagat; and SP’s Dharmendra Yadav. Other important names are TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee, DMK’s TM Selvaganapathi, and NCP’s Supriya Sule.

Support and Opposition: The government introduced two constitutional amendment bills on Tuesday to synchronize Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. However, opposition parties such as Congress, TMC, SP, and DMK expressed strong reservations. In contrast, NDA allies like TDP and JD(U) extended their support.
