Opposition Protest Over Bihar’s SIR Disrupts Monsoon Session in Parliament

The Monsoon Session of Parliament witnessed complete disruption on its second day as both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned due to intense protests by the opposition. The primary demand of the protesting MPs was a discussion on Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll and its immediate withdrawal.

On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha session began at 11 AM, but opposition MPs—led by Congress—raised slogans demanding a debate on the SIR process and the recent Operation Sindoor. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan urged MPs to return to their seats to allow discussion on farmers’ issues. Speaker Om Birla requested MPs to stop slogan-shouting and displaying placards, calling it disrespectful to the dignity of the House. As the uproar continued, the House was adjourned till noon and eventually for the entire day.

Government Calls Out ‘Double Standards’

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition, stating, “On one hand, they demand debates, and on the other, they prevent Parliament from functioning. This is hypocrisy.” He added that in the Business Advisory Committee meeting, it was agreed to hold a discussion on Operation Sindoor. The government expressed readiness to discuss any issue, but accused the opposition of wasting legislative time.

Rajya Sabha Faces Similar Chaos

Similar scenes played out in the Rajya Sabha, where opposition members protested over the SIR process in Bihar, the Pahalgam terror attack, and Operation Sindoor. Repeated disruptions forced Deputy Chairperson Harivansh to adjourn the House twice before it was finally adjourned for the day post 2 PM.

CPI MP P. Santosh Kumar also sought a discussion on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation, but all 12 adjournment notices were rejected under Rule 267.
