Partial Lunar Eclipse to Be Visible in India on March 3 Evening

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible across most parts of India on the evening of March 3, with the Moon rising already under the Earth’s shadow. The eclipse will begin at 3:20 pm and conclude at 6:47 pm, but viewers in India will only be able to observe it after moonrise.

According to the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), the total phase of the eclipse will occur between 5:03 pm and 5:33 pm. However, because this period falls before moonrise in many regions, most Indian cities will witness only a partial eclipse. In northeastern states such as Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a brief total phase may be visible due to earlier moonrise.

In countries including Japan, Australia, Fiji, Alaska and China, the full eclipse will be clearly visible. In contrast, Indian observers will see the Moon partially covered by Earth’s shadow as it appears on the horizon, with the shadow gradually receding before sunset ends the event.

Astronomers note that visibility will depend on local weather conditions and exact moonrise timing. In northeastern India, where the Moon rises earlier, the eclipse will be visible for a slightly longer duration compared to other regions.

Religious observers have also announced a sutak period beginning nine hours before the eclipse, during which temple rituals may remain suspended. The sutak will end once the eclipse concludes at 6:47 pm.
