Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 13.61 km stretch of newly built metro corridors in Kolkata, marking a major milestone in the city’s transport system. The launch included three key services — Noapara–Jai Hind Airport (via Jessore Road), Sealdah–Esplanade, and Beleghata–Hemant Mukhopadhyay routes — establishing the first direct metro link to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
PM Modi boarded the Jessore Road–Jai Hind Airport metro and interacted with school students and construction workers involved in the projects. He was accompanied by West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, and Union Minister Samik Bhattacharya.
Officials highlighted that the new Green, Yellow, and Orange metro lines will help ease traffic congestion on Kolkata’s busy roads and transform daily commutes for lakhs of passengers. The expansion is seen as a landmark in the city’s metro journey that began in 1984.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said, “Today Kolkata has taken a big step in advancing public transport. These projects will give new momentum to development in West Bengal.”
