PM Modi to Visit China for SCO Summit, First Trip Since Galwan Clash

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on August 31 and September 1. This will mark his first trip to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops. His last visit to China was in 2019.

Prior to the SCO Summit, PM Modi will travel to Japan on August 30 to participate in the India-Japan bilateral summit. Key issues to be discussed during the SCO Summit include regional security, counter-terrorism efforts, and trade cooperation among member countries.

Efforts to stabilize India-China relations and restore diplomatic dialogue are expected to be part of the discussions. PM Modi may hold informal meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit.

Although no official confirmation has been made yet regarding the Japan and China visits, this trip follows PM Modi and President Xi’s meeting at the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024, which led to renewed efforts to ease border tensions.
