Mussoorie, 5 Nov: At a programme organised to mark the Silver Jubilee of the formation of Uttarakhand, protestors and speakers remembered the martyrs’ sacrifices and questioned the government. Protesters in Mussoorie paid tribute to the martyrs’ contributions and stated that the formation of the state was the result of the agitators’ sacrifices and dedication and, therefore, honouring them should be the government’s primary focus. The protestors’ anger was also evident on this occasion. They stated that, even after 25 years, Uttarakhand has not become what the martyrs envisioned. They alleged that the state government is celebrating the anniversary in a grand manner, but the real heroes—the agitators and the martyrs’ families—are being excluded from the events.

State agitators Vijay Ramola, Devi Godiyal, and Rajendra Kandhari said, “Even today, Uttarakhand has not been created as dreamed by the martyrs. Migration from the mountains continues, corruption is rampant, and the liquor, land, and mining mafias maintain their grip on the state. It is sad that their sacrifices are not being properly honoured.” The agitators declared that the time has come for society to unite once again to realise the dreams of the martyrs.

They stated that a major movement may be needed to fulfill the spirit and ideals with which the foundation of Uttarakhand was laid. They said that it is essential for the new generation to understand that this form of Uttarakhand stands on the sacrifices of the martyrs. Despite 25 years having passed since the creation of Uttarakhand, the memories of the martyrs’ dreams and their sacrifices remain fresh. The agitators believe that it is now their responsibility to carry forward their ideals and struggle and secure the future of the mountains.
