Tourists planning to visit Mussoorie will now be required to register in advance through an online portal developed by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB), as per the guidelines issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The new registration system aims to control overcrowding and provide real-time data on traffic and tourist inflow in the region.
The registration process began on a trial basis on July 30 and 31, according to officials from the state tourism department. Once fully implemented, this system will help the police and administration manage traffic and crowd control more effectively. The number of registered tourists will be tracked live and monitored at all major entry points to Mussoorie.
To enforce the new system, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and checkpoints have been installed at key access points including Kimaadi, Kempty Falls, and Kuthal Gate. Tourists must show their online QR code-based entry pass at these checkpoints for verification.
Every year, Mussoorie receives over 20 lakh visitors, especially during the peak season, which often leads to traffic chaos and parking shortages. Responding to these challenges, the NGT directed UTDB to introduce a registration system to regulate tourist entry based on the town’s carrying capacity.
The registration portal uses OTP and email-based verification. Indian tourists will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on their mobile number, while international tourists will get the OTP on their email. Once the OTP is verified, tourists will be issued a QR code entry pass, which they must present upon arrival.
