Heavy monsoon rains have triggered widespread flooding across Uttarakhand, with Rishikesh now facing the brunt of the crisis. For the first time this season, the Ganga river has crossed the danger mark, submerging low-lying areas and reaching the iconic Shiv statue.
The water level of the Ganga rose to 340.75 meters, exceeding the danger mark of 340.50 meters. Continuous rainfall in the hills since Tuesday night has worsened the situation, causing water to enter residential areas.
Woman Dies After House Flooded
In New Chandreshwar Nagar, 45-year-old Krishna Thapa tragically drowned after rainwater entered her home. According to her family, they were shifting belongings to a nearby two-story house when they discovered her unconscious, submerged in the flooded room. She was rushed to the hospital but declared dead on arrival. Mayor Shambhu Paswan and SDM Yogesh Mehra visited the hospital and confirmed that an inquiry is underway.
SDRF and Police on Alert
With river levels rising, the SDRF remains on high alert. Inspector Kavindra Sajwan reported that announcements are being made across riverside areas, warning residents to stay away from the banks. Teams surveyed key spots such as Triveni Ghat and Janki Bridge, and advised people to shift to safer locations if necessary.
Evacuations Underway
Munikireti Police have also stepped in, conducting loudspeaker announcements in vulnerable areas like Kharasrot and Chandrabhaga River zones. Station in-charge Pradeep Chauhan said efforts are being made to move people from high-risk homes to safer shelters.
