In the latest Swachh Survekshan rankings, 27 out of 107 urban bodies in Uttarakhand have shown improved national performance, with Rishikesh’s Ganga ghats rated the cleanest among riverfronts. The Urban Development Department reported significant progress, particularly among smaller municipalities and nagar panchayats, some improving by over 2800 ranks compared to last year.
In the 50,000–3 lakh population category, Rudrapur improved by 349 ranks, Doiwala by 1219, Pithoragarh by 2434, Kotdwar by 73, Rishikesh by 55, and Ramnagar by 1913. Similarly, in the 20,000–50,000 category, Masoorie saw a jump of 1172 ranks, Muni Ki Reti by 627, and Tehri by 1770. Lal Kuan stood out in the under-20,000 category with a 1697-rank jump.
Despite these improvements, major urban centres like Haldwani, Haridwar, Kashipur, and Roorkee underperformed. Lal Kuan was awarded by the President as an emerging clean city. Rudrapur and Mussoorie were also recognized for strong performance.
However, Dehradun’s municipal corporation saw its national rank improve by six spots but dropped to 13th in state rank. Muni Ki Reti also fell to 17th in its category. Statewide, door-to-door waste collection declined from 69.76% last year to 56.6%.
Only minor gains were noted in the garbage-free city category. Dehradun, which earned 3 stars last year, received none this time. Lal Kuan, Rudrapur, Doiwala, and Vikasnagar received 1 star each.
In cantonment rankings, Lansdowne was ranked 17th, while others like Ranikhet (18), Roorkee (22), and Dehradun-Garhi (29) followed.
In the Ganga town category, Prayagraj topped the list, with Muni Ki Reti ranked 17th, Haridwar 18th, and other Uttarakhand towns like Gauchar, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag placed within the top 50.
