In response to the rising number of marital disputes and divorces in Uttarakhand, the Setu Commission has initiated a significant proposal to strengthen the institution of marriage. The commission has directed the Department of Women Empowerment to draft a detailed plan for providing professional counseling to couples entering into marriage.
The objective is to promote mutual understanding, emotional maturity, and conflict-resolution skills among couples, either before or soon after marriage. By doing so, the state aims to prevent households from breaking apart due to unresolved differences.
Setu Commission will play an active role in the process by enlisting experts from various fields and recommending them to the department. The goal is to ensure high-quality counseling that addresses the real concerns of couples and helps them build harmonious relationships.
Given the growing trend of divorces in the state, sociologists and policymakers have raised serious concerns. The commission believes that early intervention through counseling will help couples gain clarity on their expectations, legal rights, responsibilities, and emotional compatibility.
This initiative reflects a shift towards preventive social support systems, aiming to strengthen family structures and reduce the emotional and social costs of separation.
