Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patriarch Shibu Soren was cremated on Tuesday at his ancestral village, Nemra in Bokaro district, with full state honours. His elder son and former Chief Minister Hemant Soren performed the last rites.
Shibu Soren, popularly known as Dishom Guru, passed away on August 4 after a prolonged illness at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. His mortal remains were taken from Ranchi to Nemra, where thousands gathered along the route to pay their final respects. Supporters lined the roads, offering flowers and emotional tributes as the funeral procession passed through.
A large number of people, including prominent political leaders and family members, were present at the cremation. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, travelled to Ranchi to attend the final rites.
Shibu Soren was a towering figure in tribal politics and one of the key leaders of the Jharkhand movement. His death is being widely mourned as a great loss to the state’s political and social landscape.
