Under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) regulations in Uttarakhand, marriages and wills can now be registered at sub-registrar offices across all districts. Earlier, registration was available only through Common Service Centers (CSC). This decision was recommended by a high-powered committee chaired by Chief Secretary Radha Raturi.
The agreement to allow marriage registrations at sub-registrar offices came as part of an effort to end the advocates’ strike. With this move, marriage and will registrations will soon be possible in all 13 districts of Uttarakhand.
During the meeting at the state secretariat, the committee also addressed practical challenges with the UCC portal and emphasized simplifying it for easier use. Notably, the mandatory requirement to upload wedding photographs for registration will be removed. Instead, the system will extract the couple’s photos from their Aadhaar cards.
Additionally, the committee approved a suggestion to make marriage registration certificates available in DigiLocker. This will enable couples to access their certificates digitally, alongside other official documents.
