Uttarkashi: Risk of Lake Formation Persists in Syana Chatti as Debris Blocks Yamuna Flow

The threat of lake formation in Syana Chatti, Uttarkashi, continues as fresh debris and boulders from the Gadhgad stream in Kupra have again started obstructing the Yamuna river. On Sunday morning, the flow was disrupted, causing water levels to rise, though partial drainage was occurring from one side of the river.

The Yamuna’s flow is now just a few feet below the bridge on the Yamunotri Highway. Several hotels along the banks have already seen water enter their lower floors. Residents, including Jaipal Singh Rawat and Bhagat Singh Rana, expressed concern that the danger remains, as continuous debris flow from the Kupra stream poses an ongoing risk.

Irrigation Department Executive Engineer Panni Lal stated that efforts are underway to clear the accumulated debris using Poklen machines at the mouth of the stream. However, large boulders and intermittent rainfall have slowed the work. He added that three machines have been deployed for channelization for over a month and a half, but persistent weather conditions are making the task difficult.
