Heavy Rain Fills Tehri Lake, Water Released Through Spillway

Continuous heavy rainfall has raised the water level of Tehri Lake close to its maximum capacity, prompting THDC to release water through two ungated soft spillways. Nearly 1,000 cusecs of water is being discharged during morning and evening hours, while around 448 cusecs is released during the day. At present, the Tehri Dam, PSP project, and Koteshwar Dam together are generating 1,086 MW of electricity.

Spread over 42 square kilometers, Tehri Lake is permitted to store water up to 830 meters. By Monday, the reservoir had reached 822.98 RL (River Level). Officials confirmed that despite the increase, the level still remains 7.02 meters below the full capacity, with the target of filling it to 830 meters by the first week of September.

According to THDC Executive Director L.P. Joshi, the reservoir is currently receiving about 913.13 cusecs of inflow, including 316.13 cusecs from the Bhagirathi River, 386 cusecs from the Bhilangana River, and 211 cusecs from other tributaries. Authorities clarified that releasing around 1,000 cusecs poses no danger and is part of routine management to handle heavy monsoon inflows.
