Three Feet of Snow in Kedarnath: Severe Damage to Camps, Yatra Preparations in Jeopardy

Kedarnath Dham remains covered in over three feet of snow, posing a significant challenge to the preparations for the upcoming Chardham Yatra starting on May 2. Due to persistent snowfall and cloudy weather, the snow is not melting, further delaying the readiness of the pilgrimage route.

The recent heavy snowfall in March has left a thick blanket of snow from the temple premises to the pathways, with building rooftops also covered. In addition, multiple camp structures established for reconstruction activities have sustained severe damage. Reports indicate that the roofs of camps near the MI-26 helipad collapsed under the weight of the snow.

According to Vinay Jhikwaan, Executive Engineer of PWD, the damage assessment will be conducted once the snow clears. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to clear the Gaurikund-Kedarnath pedestrian route, and officials anticipate reopening the path by the first week of April if weather conditions improve.
