Trump Defers Global Tariffs by 90 Days, 125% Tariff on China

In a move that surprised global markets, former U.S. President and 2024 re-elected leader Donald Trump announced a 90-day deferral on proposed tariffs for all countries except China. The decision sparked a rally in international stock markets, though Trump’s confirmation of a steep 125% tariff on Chinese imports has injected fresh uncertainty into global trade dynamics.

Trump shared the update on his social media platform, ‘Truth Social’, stating, “I have decided to delay tariffs by 90 days because over 75 countries have responded positively to trade talks and are refraining from retaliatory actions.” Earlier on April 2, Trump had described his tariff policy as a “day of liberation” for the U.S. economy.

However, the delay does not apply to China. Trump maintained his tough stance on Beijing, announcing that the 125% tariff would be implemented as planned. This signals continuity in his adversarial trade approach toward China during his second term in office.

The announcement is expected to reshape global trade strategies, especially during the 90-day window. Analysts suggest that this period will be critical for Trump’s administration in setting the tone for future international trade relations.
