U.S. President Donald Trump has once again taken a tough stance against India, threatening a sharp increase in tariffs on Indian imports. In a statement posted on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump accused India of profiting from discounted Russian crude oil and reselling it at higher prices to other countries, including the United States.
Trump wrote, “India is not only buying large volumes of oil from Russia, but it is also selling much of it into the open market at elevated prices, making massive profits.” He further criticized India’s position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying, “India doesn’t care how many people are dying in Ukraine due to Russia’s war machine. Therefore, I will be significantly increasing tariffs on goods coming from India to the U.S.”
The former president also referenced his earlier proposal from last week, where he suggested a 25% tariff on Indian imports and called for punitive measures against countries that continue to buy oil and gas from Russia.
Trump’s remarks come at a time of growing global scrutiny over India’s oil trade practices, though the Indian government has consistently defended its energy strategy as essential for economic stability.
