The United States has imposed sanctions on multiple entities in Russia and Iran, accusing them of attempting to interfere in the 2024 presidential elections and spreading disinformation. The U.S. Treasury Department stated that these entities used artificial intelligence to exacerbate socio-political tensions and influence American voters.
Targeted Groups and Actions
The sanctions target Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-linked companies and a Russian military intelligence-affiliated group. These groups allegedly spread misinformation through fake news websites and AI tools, including false allegations against a vice-presidential candidate.
Acting Under Secretary Bradley Smith highlighted that both governments aim to undermine U.S. democratic processes. He reaffirmed America’s vigilance against such adversarial activities.
Sanctions were also placed on Russia’s Center for Geopolitical Expertise and its founder Alexander Dugin for allegedly disseminating false information through a network of over 100 websites, supported financially by Russian intelligence.
Additionally, Iran’s Cognitive Design Production Center faced penalties for efforts to influence U.S. elections and sow division among voters.
