Dehradun: In a move that brings significant relief to the people of Uttarakhand, the central government has allocated 480 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the central pool to the state for the winter season. This allocation is expected to help Uttarakhand mitigate the power shortages that typically occur during the cold months due to reduced electricity generation from hydropower projects caused by snowfall and other natural factors.
The additional electricity will ensure that the state can meet its energy demands and maintain an uninterrupted power supply during winter. This relief comes after a proactive request from Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who had recently met with Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to seek additional power from the central pool.
Initially, on September 26, 300 MW of electricity was allocated to Uttarakhand, to be supplied until March 31, 2025. However, following the Chief Minister’s request, the central government increased the allocation by an additional 180 MW, bringing the total to 480 MW. This allocation will remain in effect until June 30, 2025.

This move is expected to stabilize the state’s power supply, ensuring that residents and industries face fewer disruptions during the challenging winter months when electricity demand typically surges. The state government is hopeful that this additional power will prevent the shortages and outages that have been common in previous years, particularly in remote and hilly areas where power cuts during winter are frequent due to challenging weather conditions.
Local leaders and citizens have welcomed the move, expressing optimism about the impact this additional power supply will have on daily life and the state’s overall economy.
