Uttarakhand Tightens Anti-Conversion Law, Digital Conversions to Face Punishment

The Uttarakhand government has introduced the Freedom of Religion and Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion (Amendment) Bill in the state assembly, making the anti-conversion law more stringent. The amendment brings digital mediums of conversion under its ambit, ensuring that any attempt to convert religion online will be a punishable offense.

The new provisions categorize incentives such as gifts, promises of marriage, financial benefits, improved lifestyle assurances, or glorification of one faith over another as criminal acts if used to induce conversion. The maximum punishment has been increased from 10 years to 14 years and may extend to life imprisonment. The fine has also been raised from Rs 50,000 to Rs 10 lakh.

District Magistrates will now have the power to seize properties acquired through unlawful conversions. Victims will receive legal aid, shelter, food, medical assistance, and essential facilities, with their identity kept confidential. The government will also implement a special scheme to ensure immediate support for affected individuals.
