Uttarakhand Congress Rift: 11 Councillors, Including MLA Tilak Raj Behar’s Son Resign

Rudrapur: Infighting within the Uttarakhand Congress has intensified after the reappointment of Himanshu Gawa as the district president. In protest, Saurabh Behar, son of Kichha MLA Tilak Raj Behar, along with 10 other councillors, resigned collectively from the party’s primary membership. Their resignation letters have been sent to state Congress president Ganesh Godiyal.

The dissenting members expressed anger over the selection process, alleging that the party leadership ignored internal feedback. They said that an internal survey was conducted in Rudrapur, and several names were submitted for the post, yet the position was handed to the same person again. “If the leadership had already decided, why conduct the survey at all?” one councillor questioned.

On Tuesday, the Congress high command had appointed Himanshu Gawa as the district president, Mamta Rani as Rudrapur city president, and Alka Pal as Kashipur city president. The councillors clarified that they were not opposed to the appointment of women leaders but felt a new face should have been chosen for the district post.

Those who resigned include councillors Sushil Mandal (Ward 4), Inderjit Singh (36), Gaurav Khurana (30), Parvez Qureshi (20), Saurabh Behar (39), Shubham Das (3), Madhu Sharma (27), Anjali (23), Gaurav Giri (32), Mohd. Ashfa (13), and Shanno (26).

Kichha MLA Tilak Raj Behar strongly criticized the decision, saying, “The district president should name even one of his achievements. He has done nothing for the organization and has kept the district in decline. He only pleases one person and has never spoken a word against the BJP.” Behar accused the leadership of sidelining senior workers and warned that the party would face the consequences in the 2027 elections.
