Uttarakhand to Give ₹100 Daily to Over 13,000 Students for Commuting to Schools

In a major initiative to promote access to quality education, the Uttarakhand government will provide ₹100 per day to 13,691 students commuting to newly designated Uttam Vidyalayas (excellent schools). A total of 603 primary and 76 upper primary schools will be upgraded as part of this initiative. The financial assistance will benefit students coming from nearby schools within a 5 km radius.

Education Director General Jharnna Kamthan has issued directives to all District Magistrates for swift implementation. According to the plan, schools with low student strength located near selected Uttam Vidyalayas will be merged accordingly. At least four teachers or staff as per RTE norms will be deployed in each upgraded school.

These schools will also be equipped with smart classrooms, libraries, playgrounds, additional classrooms, and Bal Vatika (early childhood education sections) as per requirements.

To ensure smooth execution, an 11-member district-level committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the District Magistrate. The Chief Development Officer will serve as vice-chairperson and the Chief Education Officer as member secretary. The committee will oversee transportation and infrastructure needs of the students commuting to these institutions.
