Uttarakhand Disaster: Loss Estimated at Rs 5,700 Crore, State Seeks Central Aid

Natural disasters in Uttarakhand have caused damages worth over Rs 5,700 crore, prompting the state government to seek a special economic package from the Centre. A detailed loss assessment report has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs by Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman.

The highest loss has been reported by the Public Works Department (PWD), with damages of around Rs 1,164 crore due to road destruction. Other major losses include Rs 266.65 crore to the Irrigation Department, Rs 123.17 crore to the Energy Department, Rs 68.28 crore to School Education, Rs 9.04 crore to Higher Education, Rs 23.06 crore to Animal Husbandry, and Rs 213.46 crore across other departments. In total, government departments have reported direct damages of Rs 1,944.15 crore.

Additionally, the state has requested Rs 3,758 crore for preventive measures to protect infrastructure, stabilize affected areas, and avoid further risks to roads and populated regions.

From April to August 2025, natural disasters have claimed 79 lives, left 115 people injured, and 90 missing. The calamities also destroyed 238 permanent houses and 2 temporary ones, while 3,237 houses were damaged. In addition, 3,953 livestock perished.

Commercial establishments, including shops, hotels, restaurants, and homestays, have also faced severe destruction, adding to the overall economic burden.
