The Uttarakhand Cabinet has passed a key proposal benefiting differently-abled (Divyang) pensioners under the Social Welfare Department. Until now, Divyang pensioners would lose their pension benefits once their son or grandson turned 20 years old. However, following repeated appeals from disability rights organizations, the government has now amended this rule.
In its latest decision, the Cabinet approved that Divyang pensioners will continue receiving pension even after their son or grandson reaches adulthood. This move is expected to provide direct relief to over 85,866 Divyang pension holders across the state.
District-wise data shows that Haridwar has the highest number of beneficiaries at 13,028, followed by Udham Singh Nagar with 12,177 and Dehradun with 11,367. Other districts include Almora (7,133), Bageshwar (3,095), Chamoli (3,523), Champawat (2,662), Nainital (6,330), Pauri Garhwal (7,116), Pithoragarh (3,670), Rudraprayag (2,412), Tehri Garhwal (8,391), and Uttarkashi (4,567).
Officials noted that this policy change will ensure continued financial support for individuals with disabilities, regardless of changes in their household structure, helping them lead more secure lives.
