The Uttarakhand government has approved amendments to the Lecturer Recruitment Service Rules, removing the mandatory screening test for candidates. The proposal for this significant change will soon be presented to the Cabinet for final approval.
According to the Education Department, the previous recruitment process involved both a screening and a written examination. The screening test primarily focused on general knowledge, often putting subject experts at a disadvantage. This issue had been a longstanding barrier to filling vacancies with qualified specialists, exacerbating the shortage of subject-specific lecturers.
Ravindra Jugran, a statehood activist, welcomed the reform, stating that it would help appoint specialized teachers to benefit students.
Over 3,000 Lecturer Posts Vacant
Currently, the Education Department faces a shortage of 3,107 lecturers. Of these, 2,269 positions are proposed to be filled through promotions. Ramesh Panyuli, the Provincial General Secretary of the Government Teachers’ Association, highlighted that no promotions have occurred since 2018. He urged the government to proceed with promotions while adhering to court directives, as practiced in other departments.
