The path for Uttarakhand’s first sports university has been cleared as the Raj Bhavan approved the amended ordinance for its establishment. The ordinance includes provisions for a member nominated by the Governor in the university’s executive council and allows former international athletes to be eligible for the position of Vice-Chancellor.
The Sports University Bill was initially introduced during the monsoon session of the assembly in August 2024. However, it was returned by the Raj Bhavan for revisions, citing the lack of clarity on the Governor’s representation in the council and the eligibility criteria for appointing the Vice-Chancellor. Addressing these concerns, the government introduced an amended ordinance, which received Cabinet approval and subsequently Raj Bhavan’s assent.
New Criteria for Vice-Chancellor Appointment
The revised ordinance outlines specific qualifications for the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment. Candidates must have an outstanding academic record and a minimum of 10 years of experience as a professor, director of physical education, senior sports administrator, or manager in a university system. Additionally, distinguished athletes with international accolades are also eligible for the position.
