Uttarakhand to Monitor Garbage Collection Vehicles via GPS for Real-Time Tracking

Urban local bodies across Uttarakhand will now track garbage collection vehicles through GPS, ensuring better accountability and timely waste collection in all wards. Urban Development Secretary Nitesh Jha has issued directives to implement a Vehicle Location Tracking System (VLTS) across all municipalities.

Although cities like Dehradun and Haldwani already have basic GPS monitoring in place, the current systems are not robust. To strengthen this, a dedicated software will be developed with NIC’s assistance for statewide implementation.

The new system will enable real-time monitoring of garbage trucks by the Urban Development Directorate and municipal bodies. The initiative aims to resolve frequent complaints about garbage vehicles skipping certain areas.

Officials said GPS tracking will also help hold sanitation workers accountable, ensure regular visits to each ward, and improve the overall efficiency of door-to-door waste collection services.
