Uttarakhand Government MBBS Seats May Rise From 675 to 775 With Rudrapur College

Dehradun: Uttarakhand could see its government MBBS seats increase from 675 to 775 if Rudrapur Medical College receives permission to admit 100 students from the 2026-27 academic session. The college is awaiting a Letter of Permission (LOP) from the central government after its second appeal received a positive response.

If the approval is granted, Rudrapur Medical College will add 100 seats to the state’s existing government MBBS capacity. Of these seats, 85 percent will be filled under the state quota, opening additional opportunities for students seeking admission to government medical colleges in Uttarakhand.

Second appeal after NMC rejection

Rudrapur Medical College had applied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) to begin MBBS admissions with 100 seats for the 2026-27 session. The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) rejected the application, citing shortcomings in infrastructure and facilities required for a 100-seat MBBS programme.

The college subsequently filed a first appeal against the decision before the NMC. However, the MARB decision was upheld. The college then submitted a second appeal before the central government.

College addresses reported deficiencies

Following the second appeal, the college focused on addressing the shortcomings identified during the earlier assessment. The institution worked on improving its facilities and meeting requirements related to faculty and other infrastructure.

Medical Education Director Dr Ashutosh Sayana said the necessary deficiencies at the college had been addressed. He added that the response from the central government had been positive and expressed hope that permission would be granted for the current academic session.

If the LOP is issued, Rudrapur will become another government medical college in Uttarakhand to begin MBBS education, following the establishment of the government medical college in Pithoragarh. The final decision on the 100 MBBS seats is now awaited from the central government.
