Uttarakhand Implements UCC: ₹20,000 Fine for Violating Rules

UCC

The Uttarakhand government has officially enforced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), introducing strict regulations for marriage, divorce, live-in relationships, and inheritance. The new rules include mandatory registration with prescribed fees and penalties of up to ₹20,000 for violations. To ensure compliance, nodal officers have been appointed at the municipal, block, and district levels.

Marriage Registration and Fees

Under UCC, marriage registration requires a ₹250 fee, while immediate registration costs ₹2,500. If completed within 90 days, the fee is ₹200, increasing to ₹400 after this period. A delay beyond three months attracts a maximum charge of ₹10,000.

Divorce Registration Rules

For divorce registration, the initial fee is ₹250. If delayed beyond 90 days, the fee increases to ₹400, with a maximum penalty of ₹10,000.

Inheritance and Will Regulations

For inheritance-related legal heir declarations without a will, a ₹200 registration fee is required. Registration of will-based inheritance information costs ₹250.

Live-in Relationship Registration

Live-in relationships must be registered with a ₹500 fee, while renewals require ₹1,000. If the registration period expires, an additional ₹500 must be paid.

Fines and Penalties

  • Marriage registration delay: Up to ₹10,000 fine.
  • False complaints: A second false complaint incurs a ₹5,000 penalty.
  • Live-in tenants: Landlords renting to unregistered live-in couples face a fine of up to ₹20,000.

Document Retrieval Fees

Certified copies of registered documents remain free for six months. After this, fees range from ₹100 to ₹500 for obtaining records related to marriage, divorce, legal heir declaration, and live-in relationship registration.

With the UCC in place, Uttarakhand aims to regulate personal laws effectively, ensuring accountability and strict enforcement.
