Amid concerns over LPG supply, the Food and Civil Supplies Department Uttarakhand has introduced a provision for temporary gas connections for households hosting शादी समारोह in Uttarakhand. Food Commissioner Anand Swarup stated that families can obtain up to two commercial cylinders by applying through their respective gas agencies.

Addressing the media, the commissioner maintained that domestic LPG supply in the state is largely normal, despite reports of shortages affecting certain sectors. He clarified that around 5,300 commercial cylinders are being supplied daily, though a backlog of approximately 2.68 lakh domestic connections is still being addressed.

Officials said the move aims to ease pressure during peak demand periods such as weddings, while also ensuring that essential household needs are met. At the same time, the department is encouraging a shift towards piped natural gas (PNG) connections to reduce dependence on LPG. So far, around 36,300 households have been connected to PNG, and plans are underway to extend coverage to up to 1.5 lakh families by April.

The commissioner added that proposals have been sought from all districts regarding LPG requirements for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra. Any shortage identified at the district level will be communicated to the central government for timely intervention.

Enforcement action has also been stepped up against black marketing. Authorities conducted raids at 87 locations, registering 15 cases and imposing fines amounting to ₹85,100. During these operations, 672 domestic and 139 commercial cylinders were seized.

While the government has asserted that there is no major shortage, the introduction of temporary connections and enforcement drives indicates underlying supply management challenges. Officials have also advised exploring alternative fuel sources, with initiatives such as biomass briquettes in Champawat and increased wood stock at forest corporation depots being considered.
