The Uttarakhand Assembly witnessed uproar on Wednesday as all nine bills were passed amid strong opposition protests. Along with this, a supplementary budget of Rs 5,315 crore was also approved. The four-day monsoon session was cut short and concluded in just one and a half days. Despite repeated disruptions, major bills were cleared.
Among the key legislations, the Uttarakhand Minority Bill was passed, paving the way for the creation of a dedicated authority for all minority communities, including recognition for madrasas. The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) amendment bill was also approved, introducing stricter provisions for those found in unlawful live-in relationships. In addition, a tougher anti-conversion law was passed, now allowing punishment up to life imprisonment for forced religious conversions.
The session was marked by heated protests from the Congress party. Independent MLA Sanjay Dobal also joined opposition legislators in demonstrations. Tensions escalated when Congress MLA Sumit Hridayesh tore and flung papers in the House, further fueling the chaos.
