Following the results of the three-tier panchayat elections in Uttarakhand, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an aggressive campaign to secure a majority in all 12 districts. After success in Rudraprayag, 20 newly elected Zila Panchayat members from Uttarkashi met with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday in a show of growing influence.
While independent candidates initially led the district-level contests, BJP emerged as the dominant party in terms of overall performance. With the reservation process for Zila Panchayat chairperson posts underway, the party is now actively strategising to consolidate power across districts. This includes unifying party-backed winners and persuading independents to align with BJP.
Several leaders, along with newly elected members, have been making their way to the Chief Minister’s residence to pledge support. Monday saw representatives from Uttarkashi and leaders from other districts visit the CM in Dehradun, where strategies are being crafted district-wise to gather support. BJP ministers are also involved in these efforts at various levels.
Party leadership is closely monitoring every move in the ongoing power struggle. In the previous election, BJP had formed boards in 10 out of 12 districts. This time, the organisation has set its sights on claiming control in all 12.
