Uttarakhand Police has adopted a new motto, “Karm Satyam Shauryam”, replacing its earlier slogan, “Mitrata, Seva, Suraksha”. The force has also redesigned its logo for the first time in 26 years, introducing symbols representing the Himalayas, rivers and bravery.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Dehradun on November 6 to present the President’s Police Colour to Uttarakhand Police and unveil its new logo and motto.
The redesigned emblem features the Himalayas and a river surrounded by a laurel wreath, a symbol associated with victory, honour and courage. The force has also finalised a new President’s Police Colour incorporating red and blue.
New identity for the state police
After Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, its police force received a distinct identity through changes to uniform elements. While Uttar Pradesh Police used gold-coloured stars for non-gazetted officers, Uttarakhand Police adopted silver stars. The belt colour was also changed to silver.
The new logo continues the effort to distinguish the state force from Uttar Pradesh Police. The design incorporates the state’s mountainous landscape and rivers, while the uniform colour scheme was also revised, replacing the dark blue shade with a lighter sky blue.
Discussions on changing the police logo and motto had been underway for some time. The process gained momentum after the announcement in April that Uttarakhand Police would be awarded the President’s Police Colour.
Committee finalises insignia and uniform designs
A committee led by Inspector General Vimmi Sachdeva was formed to design the President’s Police Colour. The committee was also tasked with preparing the new logo and other insignia.
The designs for the logo, belt and arm badge have now been finalised. The new emblem has already been painted outside the stadium at Police Lines in Dehradun.
Once introduced, the logo will be used on police uniforms, vehicles, offices and official documents, giving the force a unified visual identity.
Laurel wreath symbolises honour and courage
The laurel wreath, made from leaves traditionally associated with the laurel tree, is widely regarded as a symbol of victory, honour, pride and integrity. In ancient Greek and Roman cultures, laurel wreaths were awarded to Olympic victors, warriors and scholars in recognition of achievement and courage.
Its inclusion in the Uttarakhand Police emblem is intended to represent the force’s history of bravery, commitment to public service and dedication to maintaining law and order.
Several other forces, including Uttar Pradesh Police, CRPF, Telangana Police and BSF, also use laurel wreaths in their insignia.
