IAS Anand Verdhan

The Uttarakhand government is planning to organize a national-level film festival to boost the state’s film industry. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan has instructed Dr. Nitin Upadhyay, Joint Chief Executive Officer of the Uttarakhand Film Development Council, to prepare a detailed proposal with the support of the central government.

During a meeting, Dr. Upadhyay briefed the Chief Secretary about the council’s ongoing activities. Bardhan emphasized that strong steps should be taken to strengthen the film-making ecosystem in the state. He also directed officials to explore possibilities of setting up low-cost cinema halls in remote hill regions, which would provide better opportunities for local artists.

Dr. Upadhyay further informed that the state has already implemented a single-window clearance system to simplify and make the film shooting permission process more transparent. Over the past year, nearly 30 regional films have been produced or are under production in Uttarakhand. In addition, several big-budget Hindi films and web series have also been shot in the state, making it an emerging hub for filmmakers.
