The Uttarakhand government has introduced a new framework under which all minority educational institutions, including madrasas, must obtain recognition from the Uttarakhand Minority Education Authority. Currently, 452 madrasas are registered under the Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board, with over 68,000 students enrolled. However, the board will cease to exist from July 1, 2026, following the amendment to the Act.
Under the revised system, madrasas will first need to secure affiliation with the Uttarakhand Board of School Education before applying for recognition from the Minority Education Authority. Only after completing this two-step process will they be allowed to operate legally.
This shift marks the end of the Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board’s role in granting recognition, as all powers will now rest with the newly designated authority. Existing madrasas will be required to complete the recognition process afresh to continue functioning.
