Uttarakhand to Declare High-Risk Spots as ‘No Selfie Zones’ Amid Rising Accidents

In a bid to curb the growing number of accidents caused by risky selfie-taking, the Uttarakhand government is set to declare several dangerous tourist spots across the state as ‘No Selfie Zones’. According to Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman, officials including DMs and district police chiefs have been issued detailed guidelines to identify and secure these high-risk locations.

The directive points out the alarming rise in selfie-related mishaps, especially among the youth, who often risk their lives for social media likes, shares, and followers. Tragic incidents in recent years have involved people falling from heights, slipping into rivers and waterfalls, or getting injured near railway tracks, wild animals, or while riding moving vehicles—all in pursuit of a perfect selfie.

To ensure safer alternatives, the government plans to develop dedicated “safe selfie spots” equipped with parking, restrooms, refreshments, and other basic amenities. These zones may be managed and maintained by local communities and women’s self-help groups, offering both employment and community involvement.

Officials have been instructed to install warning signs, increase patrolling in sensitive areas, and raise public awareness about the risks of unsafe selfies.
