Uttarakhand weather alert: Rain and snowfall likely on January 23, agencies on alert

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of rainfall and snowfall across Uttarakhand on January 23, prompting the state government to place all concerned agencies on alert mode to deal with possible disruptions.

In view of the forecast, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman held a review meeting with district disaster management officers and officials from related departments. He instructed authorities to maintain heightened vigilance in case of adverse weather conditions.

Departments including police, health, public works, electricity, drinking water, animal husbandry, and urban local bodies have been directed to ensure all essential preparations are in place. Officials were asked to respond swiftly to any emergency arising due to rain or snowfall.

Special emphasis has been laid on the safety of pregnant women and newborns in sensitive, remote, and high-altitude areas. Authorities have been instructed to make advance arrangements for safe deliveries and ensure availability of medical support in such regions.

Considering the possibility of road blockages due to snowfall, the administration has directed advance deployment of JCB machines, snow cutters, and other required equipment on sensitive and high Himalayan routes. District administrations have also been asked to identify vulnerable roads, bridges, and pedestrian paths and strengthen safety measures in these areas.
