Vice President Election 2025: EC Begins Preparations After Dhankhar Resigns

Following the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar due to health reasons, the Election Commission of India has initiated preparations for the 2025 Vice Presidential election. A press release from the Commission stated that groundwork for the election has begun, and the schedule will be announced soon after essential procedures are completed.

The Ministry of Home Affairs officially notified the resignation on July 22, 2025, which President Droupadi Murmu accepted the following day. As per Article 324 of the Constitution, the Election Commission is empowered to conduct elections for the post. The process is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952.

The EC informed that it has started compiling the electoral roll, which includes elected and nominated members of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The appointment of Returning and Assistant Returning Officers is also being finalized. Additionally, records from previous Vice Presidential elections are being reviewed to ensure a smooth process.
